“Killer Piano Meets Killer Dead”

Marco Benevento, piano genius and so-called “Mad Hatter” of experimental rock and jazz, kicks off his 2017 East Coast Tour in Syracuse on Monday, Jan. 30, with a performance at Funk n’ Waffles Downtown Syracuse.

The exuberant pianist will be joined by Pearly Baker’s Best, a local Grateful Dead tribute band that’s the house band at Funk ‘n Waffles. Doors open at 7 p.m. with show time at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Get tickets here.

The event, billed as “Killer Piano Meets Killer Dead,” is sure to attract area Dead and jam-band fans to the popular Armory Square venue.

Benevento is known for his psychedelic spin on experimental jazz piano, and a sound enhanced by a unique set of pickups on his piano.
Rolling Stone magazine called him “a psych-jazz guru” and one reviewer described him as “the Mad Hatter of Wonderland, with his audience as Alice.”

“Benevento’s concerts are aimed for those that want to be injected with bliss,” Diandra Rivera wrote in New York Theatre Guide.
Benevento, who lives in the Catskills, added the Jan. 30 date to the beginning of his East Coast Tour to kick it off in Syracuse, said the show’s presenter, Kevin Black of Ithaca.

Black said Funk ‘n Waffles, which sells out at 200 people, is the perfect venue for a Marco show.
“It’s such a nice, intimate setting that it will be easy for everyone to see and hear Marco’s artistry,” he said.

The venue has a bar featuring craft beers and wine as well as the restaurant’s sweet and savory waffles like the James Brownie Waffle and the Falafel Waffle.
